A Word About Our Apportionments

The United Methodist Church is a Connectional Church: A Word About Our Apportionments

by Merrie Bunt

As United Methodists we are called to minister to our community, but we are not alone in our ministry. The Chicago Temple is a connectional church, part of the global United Methodist Church with members numbering in the millions located on every continent around the world.

Connected in our Mission

As a global church, we have a global mission: “To Be Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World.” Together, United Methodists do remarkable ministry in support of the mission: We care for survivors recovering from natural and human-made disasters; we invest, long term, in vulnerable communities; we implement the most effective solutions to diseases like malaria; we speak truth to power giving voices to the oppressed and marginalized; we equip the next generation to lead the church and society.

Connected in our Giving

Just as we give to our church to engage in ministries to our local community and beyond, so our church gives a portion of its financial resources in support of ministries across Northern Illinois and around the world. This is called our Apportionment giving, and it lays the foundation for the worldwide ministry of the United Methodist Church. Through our Apportionment giving we are connected to the hundreds of thousands of ministries being carried out by United Methodist around the world in support of our mission.
