Chicago Temple Gallery Presents: LIVING WITH ART
Chicago Temple Gallery Presents: LIVING WITH ART
Selected works from the Collection of Patric McCoy
Opening Reception: February 2, 2020 at 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m.
The Living with Art exhibit is about sharing. Every title has a story. Every element in the artwork shares an emotion. Every piece comes from an artist’s process and creative expression. An extraordinary collection of 1300 works, acquired over 52 years by art advocate Patric McCoy, inspired this exhibit. McCoy regularly shares his collection with college art students and other enthusiasts. He loans curated works to museums and galleries. He promotes Chicago artists and encourages the practice of collecting. For McCoy, it’s a calling. He is particularly moved to collect works by artists of African descent. And, he is co-founder of an art collectors’ group, called Diasporal Rhythms. The group honors and celebrates the art and culture of African American heritage.
McCoy’s collection energizes with its many art forms and contrasts. There is intensity, depth, and emotion in much of the artwork. A black and white abstract drawing by the renowned sculptor Richard Hunt is among the works. Early ceramic work by Theaster Gates is also prominent. There is an impressive series of sculpted works by Michael Qualls. And, painter, sculptor Shyvette Williams’ collaged terra cotta vessel invites deep thought. Historic symbolism is clear in Phil Cotton’s wooden assemblage. He calls it, “I’ve Known Rivers.” While an early acquisition by AfriCOBRA artist, Nelson Stevens is powerful and striking. It’s a wonderful representation of the AfriCOBRA creative form. McCoy’s collection includes stunning mosaics and painted glass. The artwork compels one to stand at the center of his rooms, turning slowly around to take it all in.
Chicago Temple Gallery, curators selected 30 of the works for its Living with Art exhibit. Sharing the various ways that art moves us, is the essence of this exhibit. Our experiences with art inspire, bless, connect us, heal us, and, the list goes on for how it feels with art around us. Join us!
