Opera & Organ Concert Features Opera Star and Historic Organ Making Music Together in Chicago’s Loop
September 14, 2019 @ 6:00 pm
Grammy Award-winning bass-baritone Mark S. Doss will headline a unique program called “Opera & Organ” on Saturday, September 14. The concert will take place at 6 p.m. at the Chicago Temple at 77 West Washington in the Chicago Loop. Featuring arias and choruses from some of the most popular operas by Verdi, Mozart, Puccini, Wagner, Smetana, Bizet, Joplin, and others. Doss will be accompanied by Phillip Kloeckner playing Opus 414, the large symphonic organ of the First United Methodist Church at the Chicago Temple.
Doss is an alumnus of the Ryan Opera Center at Lyric Opera of Chicago and a veteran of some of the most celebrated opera and concert stages of the world. Doss has sung with the major orchestras of San Francisco, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago and Toronto. In addition, has performed 95 roles with more than 60 opera companies around the world, including Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, the Vienna State Opera, London’s Covent Garden, San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Canadian Opera Company.
With the kaleidoscopic sound of the organ filling the role of the orchestra, Doss will present solo arias from a broad range of the operatic repertoire. A small opera chorus comprised of select Chicago singers will join Doss in filling out some of the selected scenes. Kloeckner will perform transcriptions of opera overtures and organ music by opera composers, including the first public performance in Chicago of some of the newly discovered organ works by Giacomo Puccini. This performance highlights the history of Opus 414 and anticipates the centennial celebration of the contributions the instrument has made to the culture of Chicago. The organ is 95 years old and was custom-built for First United Methodist Church and the Chicago Temple Building by famed Boston organ builder E. M. Skinner in 1924.
